Jim Furyk Back Golfing After Six Months Off Due to Injury

Jim Furyk Back Golfing After Six Months Off Due to Injury

Jim Furyk returned to golfing at the Genesis Open at the Riviera Country Club. The appearance was the first one in the 2017/18 season for the PGA Tour. Jim joined the circuit in 1994.

It is Furyk’s first start in the PGA Tour in over six months. Jim last played in August before a shoulder injury slowed down his progress. The shoulder pain prevented Jim from qualifying for the playoffs, which was the first time he failed to appear in playoffs in his illustrious career.

Despite playing in February 2018 in the Genesis Open on a sponsorship basis, Jim has limited status to his previous champion status. To enhance his participation on the sponsor exemption, Jim could have used his one-time option for appearing in the top 50 career lists on an earning basis but decided not to. At the Riviera Country Club on 13 February 2018, Furyk stated he was not sure if he was healthy enough when he made the decision. He added he has to decide within a week or 10 days to compete in the Tour Championship.

Jim last started in the PGA Championship in August 2017, and he said at the time he was not going to be fit enough to play until January 2018. The lack of playing time limited Jim’s options leaving him only to utilize the money earned top 50 exemptions.

Jim plans to participate in over 18 events for the 2018 season. He hopes to use the upcoming months before matches in Paris to know various potential players. He also hopes to use the regular schedule to prepare for captaining the US Ryder Cup squad later in this year in the competition.

Jim has opted to play in the Past Champions category during the 2018 season. Jim has won 17 GPA Tour titles and returned to golfing in February through sponsorship invitation. He ranks number 156 in the FedEx Cup.
